Grant Overview

Environmental Justice Advocacy in Kentucky

Kentucky faces serious environmental challenges that disproportionately affect Black women and girls. Many communities, particularly in urban areas like Louisville and rural regions across the Appalachian Mountains, grapple with toxins and pollutants that contribute to health disparities. According to environmental justice reports, Kentucky ranks among the highest states for pollution exposure, with low-income households suffering the most. This reality underscores significant barriers to health equity in the state.

Local Black women and girls are at the forefront of these struggles, often directly affected by environmental hazards such as contaminated water and air pollution. The lack of comprehensive education around these issues hampers their ability to advocate for their health and well-being. Many individuals in affected areas are unaware of their rights or lacking the resources necessary to mobilize effectively, leading to a cycle of neglect and harm.

The funding program aims to establish an environmental justice advocacy initiative specifically for Black women and girls in Kentucky. This initiative will focus on educational workshops that delve into critical environmental issues, empowering participants with the knowledge to advocate for change in their communities. By collaborating with local environmental groups, the program will equip these women with tools for community organizing, policy advocacy, and effective engagement with stakeholders.

In terms of eligibility, applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations operating within Kentucky, with a demonstrated history of working in environmental justice or community advocacy. Organizations will need to outline their strategies for reaching Black women and girls effectively, detailing how they intend to develop educational programming focused on local environmental issues. Additionally, applicants should demonstrate collaboration with grassroots organizations to further enhance community impact.

Kentucky's environmental landscape is uniquely characterized by its historical reliance on coal and other industries that have left lasting environmental scars. Therefore, funding devoted to this cause is not only forward-looking but essential for redressing past harms. By fostering a new generation of environmental advocates among Black women and girls, this initiative aims to address immediate health concerns while also paving the way for broader systemic reforms in environmental policy across the state.
