Grant Overview

Developing Culturally Inclusive Risk Assessment in Kentucky

Kentucky faces critical challenges in addressing the mental health and substance use needs of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) youth. Despite having a smaller AI/AN population compared to other states, Kentucky's diverse geography and varying levels of access to healthcare create unique barriers to effective intervention. The Kentucky Health Issues Poll reveals that 17% of adults in rural areas report unmet mental health needs, highlighting a substantial gap in services that an AI/AN population may also experience.

Particularly in areas like the Appalachian region, the AI/AN communities tend to face compounded challenges related to poverty, historical marginalization, and limited access to culturally relevant mental health services. Many individuals within these communities may not trust the healthcare system due to past injustices, making it essential for programs to build rapport and understanding before effective intervention can take place.

This grant focuses on creating culturally tailored risk assessment tools specifically designed for AI/AN youth in Kentucky. These tools will take into consideration the cultural contexts and specific needs of these populations, improving the identification of at-risk individuals. By integrating local cultural knowledge and community input, the initiative aims to create a framework that more accurately reflects the experiences of AI/AN young people in Kentucky.

Implementing these culturally inclusive risk assessment tools means developing assessments that utilize terminology and frameworks relevant to the experiences of AI/AN youth. Training will involve community members and culturally competent professionals to facilitate trust and engagement. As a result, assessments will not only be more reflective of AI/AN experiences but also more effective in connecting youth to the support they require. By acknowledging cultural nuances, Kentucky can begin to dismantle some of the barriers that have historically limited effective interventions for AI/AN youth.

The long-term goal is to ensure that no AI/AN youth in Kentucky goes unassessed or unsupported due to a lack of culturally responsive frameworks. By investing in these tailored tools, Kentucky can work towards a more equitable mental health landscape that recognizes and respects the distinct needs of AI/AN youth. This initiative represents a critical step in addressing longstanding disparities while promoting a future where all youth receive the care they need, from a system that understands and values their lived experiences.
