Grant Overview
Creating a Digital Resource Hub for LGBTQ+ Healthcare in Kentucky
Kentucky faces significant disparities in healthcare access for LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly in rural areas where the distribution of culturally competent healthcare providers is severely lacking. For example, 63% of LGBTQ+ individuals in Kentucky report experiencing discrimination in healthcare settings, which contributes to higher rates of mental health issues, substance abuse, and untreated medical conditions. This context establishes a pressing need for accessible and affirmative healthcare resources tailored to the LGBTQ+ community.
Individuals living in urban areas like Louisville may have slightly better access to LGBTQ+-friendly services, yet many still encounter barriers, including a shortage of providers trained to address their specific health needs. Rural residents face even more daunting obstacles, often traveling long distances for basic healthcare services, which may not be welcoming or understanding of their identities. Consequently, many in the LGBTQ+ community refrain from seeking care altogether, leading to poorer health outcomes.
This funding initiative aims to develop a comprehensive digital resource hub dedicated to connecting LGBTQ+ individuals with healthcare providers across Kentucky. By consolidating information on available services, the hub will serve as a vital tool in addressing the challenges of finding culturally competent care. It will not only catalog healthcare providers but also include information on mental health services, addiction support, and preventive care, thereby promoting healthier outcomes and encouraging increased engagement with healthcare systems.
The establishment of such a resource hub is essential given Kentucky's unique geographic and demographic landscape. With around 55 counties classified as medically underserved, improving access to quality healthcare is critical. Unlike initiatives in neighboring states that may prioritize different community groups, this Kentucky-focused project targets LGBTQ+ individuals, ensuring that their specific needs and barriers are addressed through tailored digital solutions. By fostering an environment where LGBTQ+ individuals can easily find and access necessary healthcare, the initiative will help to reduce disparities and improve health equity across the state.
